New Player's Clinic, May 5, 6 pm

CPUC will be hosting another New Players' Clinic at 6 pm on Tuesday, May 5, at Lingle Field (go to Southside Elementary School at 4525 Union Deposit Road; turn down Pleasant Rd. until you hit a big parking lot and lots of athletic fields).

This clinic is for anyone wanting to learn how to play ultimate frisbee. You will learn the basics of the game while learning skills like forcing, spirit of the game, stacking and throwing forehand. Don't know what these terms mean? Well then, this clinic is for you! Or if you do know what they mean, but want practice, this clinic is for you!

As an extra incentive for women players, the first 10 new women (have been playing ultimate for one year or less) who sign up for the clinic (email me at wendyshaver@verizon.net) will get a new disc at the clinic.

As an incentive for everyone, there will be a beginner level pick-up game at the end of the clinic so you can practice your newly learned skills! And there will also be yummy food and drink!

Invite your friends! We love people who have never played ultimate before!

And to all of you veterans, I need your help running the stations at the clinic, as well as participating as on-field coaches in the pick-up game. Let me know asap if you can help. It's really fun to teach your love and knowledge of the game.

Winter league 09 wrap up

Sweet Peaches and Shaver started off with a close game but the Sweetness pulled a little away and then a lot away for a big victory for the Winter League 09 Championship. Newcomers the Kratz’s seemed to be an X factor while Damian and Hugh had easy plays in the middle all night long. Having Brindle, Drew, the Schach, Christian, an assortment of the Jive’s finest ladies and a 60 lb skinnier Dave Darowish helped Peaches to her first league championship.

Spirit Awards

On the Men’s side, Wyatt McGuire and Sami Tannouri tied for the most number of recognitions by their opponents. Wyatt took home a Five Ultimate summer league shirt (it will fit in the future Wyatt) and a gift card from Dicks Sporting. Sami we have a shirt for you when you show up for pick up or summer league.

On the women’s side there was a tie that resulted in a heptagon Ro-Sham in the lobby. Hannah and Miah disappeared early, followed by Peaches and Rhonda. Kristin, Nellie (why is Amy Johns dragging me to the lobby Nellie) and Lyndsey (Pie) Piecyk listened to Schultzie remind them that they only get one fire in their lives as they went through a few rounds until Pie knocked them both out at one time. Pie got the certificate and shirt while Brindle took an not-black shirt as did Nellie.

This year the following persons were recognized by their opponents for playing hard and having fun as well as earning the respect of their fellow players. Oh to be young and have an alias!

Who would have thought that the last regular season game would be an exact preview of the playoffs ... that is what has happened as the Sweet Peaches took the number one seed, Team Shaver the two seed, Messiah the three seed and Banditos the fourth seed. The Jive and GFunk Allstars ver. XXX will play in the three/four bracket.

For the second time this league in conjunction with local disc golfers we are having a canned goods drive - last time we got about 30 cans - lets go for a few more (part of the 347 lbs of food and $574 raised by the Creekside Crawdads) these donations will be included with the Fighting Llamas of Pinchot State Parks annual donation. Jeff will be shivering by the door before the games to collect donations. On the right hand side the muddy men of Messiah have returned to town post Vegas and will join their ladies to see if they can get back to their winning ways against the Sweet Peaches. Gburg, the inflictors of said pain against Messiah will take on Shaver to see if they can join the log jam at 2 and 2. Banditos need a win to climb back into said logjam for the top 4 spots.

Wednesdays - The return of pickup

Pickup will start up again every week starting next Wednesday, September 3rd at 6:00 PM. The location is 1775 Lambs Gap Rd, Mechanicsburg, 17050 at the soccer field next to the church and playground.

My intention is to keep this weekly game going until it gets too cold. If possible, I would also like to run this pickup a little differently then normal. After the initial warm-up phase of normal pickup, I would like to form teams and have a "serious" game or two. I think this provides the best mix of fun and competition while not requiring any sign-ups or commitment.

Please come out on Wednesdays for some fun and spirited competition. Invite a friend, spread the word!

Anyone interested in playing pickup Wednesday nights at the plush and spacious Lambs Gap Rd field? We should be able to get exclusive use of it for Wednesdays in the fall (for free of course).
I know the location is not ideal for everyone, but it is near a major highway and is a nice field that we do not have to fight with soccer leagues to use.

We had a lot of fun on Tuesday (including a game of girls vs guys*) but we need more people! I will be at the field at 6 PM rain or shine. The field is located in front of the church and playground next to the I-81 overpass. The best way to get there for most people will be to use the Wertzville exit off 81.

Free Discs for Women attending Clinic

Thanks to a promotion by the Ultimate Players Association, the first 10 newbie women (have been playing for a year or less) who sign up for the clinic (by emailing Wendy at wendyshaver@verizon.net) will receive a new disc at the end of the clinic.

Thanks to the Central Pennsylvania Ultimate Club, there will be pizza and non-alcoholic drinks to enjoy after the clinic. Please let us know if you plan to attend so that we can best prepare.

We need experienced men and women with a passion for teaching ultimate to assist at the clinic. Let Josh or Wendy know if you would like to organize drills or act as a "playing coach" on the field when we play a pickup game towards the end of the clinic.

Congratulations to the 2008 CPUC Winter League champions Mammoth Rebellion! Mammoth, the number one seed, defeated the number three seed Worley Birds 32 - 19 to complete their nearly perfect run. Also congratulations to our spirit winners Amy Johns and Jordan Winey. They both, as well as many others, showed great enthusiasm and sportsmanship throughout the league.
Thank you to the captains for volunteering to help make the league a success and of course to Jeff Ross whose hard work and dedication makes all things CPUC possible.

Business As Usual
The highly anticipated matchup between the Worleybirds and Business as Usual started with a flourish. Clad in shirts and ties with tight brown pants optional, BaU won the toss and watched the Worleybirds fly to a four or five point lead. Once BaU figured out that happy hour was over they traded points with the Worleybirds for much of the contest and were able to claw their way back into the way thanks to some clutch defense by players like Josh Rosencrance (who happens to have the nickname of Bird), Drew, Pepe, and Hily. BaU finally got the disc back with a chance to take the lead, but Schultze splendorific layout D allowed the Worleybirds to set up for the go ahead goal. BaU struggled to get anything going at the end of the contest, and the Worleybirds took their first W. Quite an amazing game to watch as everyone gave their all whether they bid across the field for a disc or outjumped their old roommate (sorry, Schultze), to rip down a D.

Worley Birds
We came into this game hoping to earn our first win, but I became skeptical when I saw the talented, veteran players comprising Business As Usual. We came out strong, nonetheless, and scored the first three points. From that point we led by as many as five and as little as one, and we were able to win the game 29-26. No single player from our team had a stand-out performance, but every player made significant contributions to our performance. And whatever was missing from our team in week two showed itself in week three. We relied on the huck in our first two games, but we rarely attempted long passes this game. We relied on conservative passing instead. This was in stark contrast to BAU who often looked to attack deep and frequently attempted crossfield hammers to the breakside for scores. BAU's performance consisted of a mix of spectacular catches and uncharacteristic drops. It was a contrast in styles, but it made for an exciting game. BAU, like our other two opponents, also were very positive and friendly. One of BAU's players even stopped play just in front his own goal line to allow the player defending him to untangle himself from the sideline netting. Nice playing BAU and good luck in the rest of your games!

Worley Birds:
We had another well-played and spirited game on both sides, but, like last week, we came up a bit short.
Our attendance more than doubled from from our first game, and though we were all happy to add to the youth, skill, and experience of our team, the increased numbers proved to be a challenge with regards to finding the same chemistry we had last week. With respect to strategy, we attempted to "force net," which happened to be backhand. But that strategy backfired as Rhinostomp consistently scored with backhand hucks and around flick breakmarks. After trading scores for the first 8-10 points, the game began to slip away despite an early timeout to stop the bleeding. It was not until we decided to switch the force to flick that we were able to make our comeback. Though Rhinostomp still scored on a couple of hucks after we switched the force, we were able to reduce flick huck attempts and completions better than we were able to with backhand hucks, and we were almost entirely able to prevent around backhand breakmarks. And though a flick force creates the opportunity for crossfield hammers (which are more likely to be attempted and completed in indoor ultimate), Rhinostomp only attempted one consequential hammer that I can remember, though it was completed for a score. We were down by as many as 7 or 8 (maybe more -- I stopped checking the score at some point) and were able to get within 2 points just before the lights dimmed. But it was too late; our fiery comeback was extinguished by Rhinostomp.

RhinoStomp:
Both RhinoStomp and Mark's Team (I recall them having some name related to birds) came out strong in this heated game. Right from the start the D's were flying allowing for RhinoStomp to jump to a quick lead. This lead was quickly erased and the game was too close for either team's comfort. RhinoStomp managed to remain in the lead for the majority of the game, but it wasn't without endless effort. With the pinpoint hucks and face melting speed for players like Chris Shultze, RhinoStomp definitely had their work cut out for them. It was the vicious defense played by the RhinoStomp ladies and gents that the allowed the game to remain in their hands. In the end, the quick movement of the disc and fluid movement of RhinoStomp withheld long enough to claim the victory. Hopefully this doesn't cause any trouble at home with Mark and Jenny.

RhinoStomp:
The game started off with some quick D's that were cashed in for points by RhinoStomp. With the quick speed of the ladies of the squad (Jenny Pack, Andrea, and Becky) these D's were vicious and frequent. Of course there were also the expected spectacular layout D's and skies by Simon and DBear (the gruesome twosome from Shippensburg). Gettysburg was able to put together a number of unstoppable runs where they racked up the points with hucks to the familiar all-stars of the squad like Raynor (now back from Argentina and hungry for disc) and new freshman members Keiran and Connor. The points were quick, but not painless. The ladies of RhinoStomp seemed to go deep at will and, unfortunately for Gettysburg, score at will, which proved to be too much for the college squad in the end. RhinoStomp stomped out Pan Fried Funk 39-12, like a rhino stomps out a fire in the safari.

Bill:
The game started quickly as Kurau's team jumped to a quick 5 or 6 point lead (not sure because no one helped captain Kurau keep score early in the game). Witmer's team began to realize that Kurau's strategy was to let Shelly or Matt or anyone who touched the disc throw jump ball's up to Rosencrance or Carri. Fun to watch, but stressful as a captain looking to start the season with a W. The game proved to be very athletic with a lot of tremendous layouts by Rabold, Easterbrook, Rosencrance, Hepner, et al. Witmer's team got within a few points, but Kurau's squad played smart offense to take a large lead and cruise to victory. Well played by both teams with no youngsters to chase around.

Mammoth Rebellion:
On a night clearly fit for ultimate outdoors, Messiah's Mammoth Rebellion took to the slippery streets and agreed to drive up to H'burg to play indoors (wimps). Much to our surprise we found a familiar face on the opposing team Chris Schultze, the man of supurb legend at Messiah, and the man who started everything for us here. Both teams started with a few let downs. Our opposition only had one lady in attendance and were forced to play a man down while Messiah was wondering where in the world our other third car was. So the game began and was played at a smooth high level, trading points until it was about fives or so (messiah called their third car and realized they had found theirselves on the other side of harrisburg). Both teams at this point, realizing just how out of shape everyone was began to buckle down suck it up and play some hard D. Due to sloppy play or supirior defense, points were scored a little bit slower and the teams had to run a lot harder sucking the energy from both teams. A time out was called with the score being abot 15-9 Messiah (messiah made another call to our lost members and had them headed on a starit path to the complex). Much to the rebellion's surprise we gave up three straight points to begin the half. They had clearly taken adcantage of their time out to rest up and came out super hard. However messiah again began to pull away when we finally realized we had a great advantage of having an extra open cutter the entire time and began to play much chiller systematic offense. This became a little too much for shultzes team and their clammy zone thing began to open up as exhaustion began to sit in. With about 15 minutes to go (and still no sign of our third car) the two teams continued to grind it out until the lights went out. The game was filled with spectacular catches on both sides (not to mention Messiah's rookie with two sick bids), full field hammers (gotta love indoor), and great spirit. Overall, the game was a great success, including the no show of the third car, which gave up on finding the place and eventually headed home, only becuase the 4 guys that were there played a lot more!

Mark:
All of the players played well but the women from both teams really stood out. We were able to stay in the game because Katie played so well, and they were able to keep us at bay because their women consistently made great throws and catches.

The clinic is designed for individuals that have never played the sport of Ultimate or have been playing for (approximately) less then one year. The goal is to teach the basic rules and techniques used in most game situations. All are welcome to attend, participate or help.
The first 10 female players to attend will receive a free disc courtesy of the Ultimate Players Association (www.upa.org). The event is sponsored by the Central PA Ultimate Club.
